In case you weren’t aware, the first Sunday of every August is Sister’s Day, and we fear that you may have forgotten to make plans to mark the occasion. Don’t fret, however, because we’ve got a list of sisters you can watch here on AnimeLab to your heart’s content!
Specifically, we wanted to discuss some of our favourite little sisters, as part of our endless endeavour to determine the most kawaii imouto of all. They may be brats sometimes, but their hearts are in the right place.
Incidentally, the other important thing in life is anime, but you probably already knew that.
When Tanjiro Kamado returns to his home out in the mountains to find his family brutally murdered, only his wounded sister Nezuko remains. His attempt to rescue her is thrown into peril upon her awakening, as she has turned into a demon and her eyes are filled with bloodlust.
It’s definitely not turning out to be a fun day.
Though it appears at first that he’s done for, Nezuko’s temperament suddenly changes, revealing that she’s still in there, somewhere, fighting hard to resist the urge to tear her brother to shreds. Before she was rendered into a monster, Nezuko was kindhearted and selfless, putting others before herself, and this quality continues to shine through.
Sure, she’s a little unhinged and can literally separate heads from shoulders with a single kick, but she’s still Nezuko at the end of the day. Her love for Tanjiro is her sole driving factor, stopping at nothing to defend him from the forces of darkness.
Their bond is just as inspiring as it is heartbreaking. They live for one another, fight for one another, and Nezuko cannot even express the kind of horrors going on inside her head. She’s trapped in a body she only has partial control of, liable to lose her senses at any moment and give into her demonic desires.
Just let the poor kid dig holes! She likes holes.
The protagonist of this anime, Hachiman Hikigaya, is often described as a dead fish; completely disinterested with the world, staring ahead with a look of pure apathy. It’s creepy, to be quite honest. Stop it Hikigaya-kun!!
His little sister, Komachi, however, is the exact antithesis, brimming with energy and a bubbly, can do personality. She possesses an indomitable spirit and a strong sense of justice too, capable of turning incredibly cold towards people she deems guilty of wrongdoing. In tense situations, she knows just what to say, and exactly how to say it. Her worldly wisdom can be rather surprising.
Beyond this, she’s also somewhat clueless most of the time — forgetful, slovenly and absolutely shameless. If she asks to borrow something, don’t ever expect to see it again. It’s Komachi’s now.
Her vibrant personality helps bring Hachiman up to a level of normalcy by association. She’s insistent on trying to bring him out of his shell, and though he may treat her with his trademark brand of snide indifference, it’s clear that he has a soft spot for her.
…Or at the very least, he tolerates her, and that’s probably about as much as you could ask of him. As he once put it, siblings could be considered ‘the closest stranger in your life’. Poignant, isn’t it?
A quartet of elite MMORPG players has been making quite the online stir. Known as Blank, they’ve dispatched of countless enemies without suffering a single loss. The gaming community is abuzz over who could be the four masterminds behind these brutes, but the truth is that it’s actually just a duo of multitasking NEETs.
As impressive as they may be in the digital realm, siblings Sora and Shiro were a fairly uninspiring pair in real life. They simply sat around a dark room in front of a computer screen for hours on end as a form of escapism, an existence that ultimately condemned them to the alternate universe of Disboard. Here, conflicts are decided through mutually agreed games rather than violence.
Even before then, Shiro practically existed on another realm, with unmatched intellect and decision-making skills. If it appears as though she’s spaced out, it’s probably due to the fact that she hasn’t slept in many days. She’s ruthless when she needs to be, and her raddled demeanour can lull you into a false sense of security.
Shiro and Sora are so in tune, they always know what the other is thinking, and in tandem, they’re nigh unstoppable. He does all the talking, while she simply acts out of an innate understanding of probabilities and outcomes. She’s like a tiny little super computer!
Separate them for just one moment, however, and they go into a panic, as if that computer had a major malfunction. Such unity seems to have its drawbacks, after all.
In Robert Louis Stevenson’s 19th century classic, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, he explored the duality of human nature — the idea that there dwells within us a constant struggle between good and evil. We have our outward appearance that we share with the world, and an underlying id seeking only gratification.
The hapless Taihei Doma gets to see this play out firsthand whenever his younger sister Umaru walks through the door. At first glance, she’s the perfect high schooler; intelligent, compassionate, talented and stunning. Once she escapes the public eye however, she goes through an unfathomable transformation, literally deflating into a pudgy little slacker. That’s when you know that Umaru is officially off the clock.
As far as little sisters go, this chibi-Hyde has all of the usual traits, dialled up to 11. She spends her day lounging around in her own filth, surrounded by empty chip packets and enough crumbs to feed a small family.
Her passions include napping, snacking and manga, she’s immature and rude, prone to throwing tantrums when she doesn’t get her way… and that’s when it occurred to me that she is basically an allegory for all of us. I’m not sure how I feel about that revelation.
Look, it’s just impossible to choose between Kobato and Maria — so we went with both! I’m sure they would find that notion absolutely infuriating if they found out.
Kobato Hasegawa (ku ku ku!) is an adorable sufferer of chunibyo, convinced that she is in fact a gothic vampire. While channelling this persona, she’s supremely confident and doesn’t mince words, amply prepared to face off against the foolish mortals of light. When she has to put on a regular face, however, you can barely get a single word out of the girl.
Her fiercest rival, Sister Maria, has no filter whatsoever. She will loudly express her exact intentions and demands, likely finishing the thought by declaring you to be a poopy head. Bring her copious amounts of junk food to escape her wrath.
They’re both vying for the attention of Kodaka, Kobato’s actual brother and Maria’s favourite provider of snacks. Kobato does not take kindly to anyone who comes between her and her ‘other half’, so Maria is constantly in her crosshairs.
Despite this, they have a lot in common and are actually good friends when they’re not at each other’s throats. Suffice to say, those moments of reprieve are few and far between.
That’s just a handful of AnimeLab’s loveable imouto, but there’s plenty more for you to enjoy this Sister’s Day! So make sure to be super nice to your sibling this weekend, whether she’s a younger sister, an older sister, or an identical twin!
…And I guess you can not be a jerk to your brother, if you want. Up to you.
