The ‘Animation x Paralympics’ anime shorts on Japan’s national public broadcaster, the NHK, highlights some of the sports that will be played at the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Games. Kyoto Animation was set to produce a short for the project but “was canceled because it could not be made before the Tokyo Paralympics” started, said the website for the project on February 28.
Kyoto Animation’s short was set to premiere in August 2019 according to Nikkan Sport, and production was fully underway for it until the anime studio was attacked by an arsonist on July 18. The attack killed 36 employees of the studio, including Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid director Yasuhiro Takemoto, legendary animator Yoshiji Kigami, chief animation director on the Free! franchise Futoshi Nishiya, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya character designer Shouko Ikeda, among many more talented individuals that made the studio great. Studio 1, where the attack occurred, is currently in the process of being demolished.
